CHILLICOTHE, Ohio -- December 16, 2021 -- Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) are crucial subjects to learn to enhance problem-solving skills at home, work or in the classroom. Fluor-BWXT (FBP) recently donated $1,500 for materials to help students at Bishop Flaget Catholic School focus on these topics through a unique STEM program.

Assistant Principal Terrina Fahnestock started the STEM program at the school, which was recently designated the first ODE-designated STEM school in Ross County and the Diocese of Columbus. The school has also received the Governor’s Thomas Edison Award for Excellence in STEM Education and Student Research for the 16th year in a row.
“We’re going to use these donated funds to refill some of our ‘Maker’s Space’ tools and get items that are easier for younger students to learn because a lot of these tools are geared for third grade and up,” Fahnestock said. “I really feel like our preschool, pre-K and kindergarten don’t get to tap into it as much, so those are the grades we’d like to focus on.”
FBP Nuclear Operations Manager John Albright, is involved with FBP’s STEAM Ahead program for students. STEAM ahead provides hands-on activities for students through subject matter experts in science, technology, engineering, arts and math. The program is brought to the students and has recently provided programming at schools in Pike County.
“Schools that integrate STEM activities into their curriculum allow for the students to show their creativity and problem solving abilities,” Albright said. “It’s a privilege to be a small part of that effort and a part of providing resources for schools to have the opportunity to expand their programs.”
