FBP installs updates to existing power structure

PIKETON, Ohio -- May 4, 2023 -- In April, crews anchored 50-foot tall steel H-frames to concrete foundations at a new electrical substation for the Portsmouth site. Fluor-BWXT Portsmouth’s (FBP) new substation will be “right-sized,” easier to maintain, and much smaller than the nearby X-530 Switchyard that it will ultimately replace.

Michels Power Inc. employee Brandon Gee helped install H-frame structures for the new X-555 substation being built at the Portsmouth site.

The X-555 substation will eventually be connected to power lines from the new switchyard American Electric Power (AEP) is building near the West Access and Perimeter Road intersection.

Michels Power Inc. began construction of the new substation in January.

“This was the first Department of Energy project that Michels Power Inc. had been involved with and they adapted quickly to the site’s Integrated Safety Management System (ISMS) policies and completed the project with no injuries or incidents,” Construction Manager Dave Lipinski said.

Power lines to the substation will end at the H-frames until the rest of the electrical equipment is installed.

Once completed, the X-555 Substation will utilize 138 kV from the AEP switchyard instead of the existing 345kV transmission lines coming in from multiple locations. In addition to the H-Frames, Michels safely installed a ground grid, a Trenwa trench system for the electrical cables, and a large underground concrete vault for Alternating Current (AC) power.
