Fluor-BWXT Named 2018 Member of the Year by Portsmouth Area Chamber of Commerce

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- October 24, 2018 -- The Portsmouth Area Chamber of Commerce presented Fluor-BWXT Portsmouth (FBP) with the 2018 Member of the Year award Tuesday, Oct 23, during the Chamber’s annual dinner at Shawnee State University’s Sodexo Ballroom.

Tim Poe, FBP Director of Nuclear Operations and Chairperson of the Company’s Community Commitment Steering Group and Bob Smith, FBP Site Project Director accept the award from Chip Maillet, Chamber board member and Dave Stone, Chamber President.

“Fluor-BWXT makes a real difference in the Portsmouth community by investing in our small businesses, our economy and our people,” said Lisa Carver, Executive Director of the Portsmouth Area Chamber of Commerce. “That level of commitment is why we are proud to name FBP our 2018 Member of the Year.”

FBP is the prime contractor for decontamination and decommissioning (D&D) and environmental cleanup work at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Portsmouth Site in Pike County.  One of the company’s main objectives, since winning the D&D contract in 2010, is reinvesting in region that is economically impacted by the site including Portsmouth and Scioto County.

“We are proud of this award and the recognition we have received from Portsmouth area business and community leaders.  This award is the result of FBP’s willingness to reinvest in the region through our Community Commitment Plan,” said Bob Smith, Fluor-BWXT Site Project Director. “Since starting the plan in 2011, FBP has invested more than $365 million through purchasing goods and services from local businesses, providing economic development grants and contributions to our non-profit and charitable organizations.”

FBP’s Community Commitment Plan is led by a diverse steering committee of site personnel. “None of this is possible without the leadership and direction of our Community Commitment steering committee including our Chairperson Tim Poe and Vice Chair Jim Morgan,” said Smith. “Through their work with the Joint Economic Development Initiative of Southern Ohio (JEDISO), FBP is able to prioritize our investments to maximize the positive impact on the region’s economy.”

Through this collaborate approach, FBP’s investment of $3.1 million from earned award fee has helped JEDISO attain more than $90 million in matching funds to create and retain approximately 1,300 jobs in Jackson, Pike, Ross and Scioto counties.
